aatombomb: They're just like us!

pareene:

The sad thing (in addition to the existence of people who think and act like Anonymous, which is itself a sad thing) is that a smart editor — or an editor who gave a shit about the integrity of the site in addition to the site’s mission to run stories that will get a lot of…

Obviously I largely agree with Pareene but I’ve been meaning to say something about Denton all day, which is: he loves the “they’re just like us” story. And he doesn’t actually think it’s shaming. He thinks it’s revelatory that “famous people” are indeed the same as we are and that that’s a good thing. And I don’t disagree!

Something happens in the creation and web packaging of these stories though. They get slutted up for pageviews. I would be interested in a story from someone who had gotten drunk with Christine O’Donnell and had some insight into her! I would prefer it if they’d like, recorded some dialogue at least, or weren’t out to reveal themselves as an idiot who’s afraid of how OMG WOMEN HAVE BODY HAIR.

Still, there’s not a huge difference between the “good” version of this story and the current awful one, I don’t think. But the story-teller is gross and the story-packager is way out in crazytown.

That being said, it’s not really a genre of story that exists unless it’s tabloid. I wish it was. Look at the tortures Jake Tapper went through writing about his date with Monica Lewinsky. He literally said “Here comes the whoring,” or some such. (Update: “That said, let the whoring begin.” He also said: “I also want to point out that behind this particular bimbo eruption sits a young woman who is not a bimbo.”) He KNEW he was packaging his story in a way that’s gross—to appeal to vindictiveness and prurience and all the things we see today.
